After International Hamburger Day, World Tapas Day on 16 June and International Sushi Day on 18 June will also follow this month. What exactly it entails? Just a great opportunity to grab a fork or pull out the chopsticks.
Tapas only Spanish?
Tapas are originally Spanish appetisers. A warm-up before the real dinner starts. The small dishes are often served with alcoholic refreshments. Fun fact: very early on, when travel was only on horseback, riders would take a break in inns. To catch their breath with a good draught. To prevent them from getting back on their horses drunk, they would be offered snacks in the hope that they would not drink alone.
An evening of bites
By now, tapas have long been considered an evening meal. And not only in Spain. In the Netherlands, too, we do like an evening snack. It is a cosy way of being together and eating together.
In the centre of Helmond, there are restaurants specialising in small bites, where you can feast on tapas all year round.

International Sushi Day
Did you think the origin of sushi was in Japan? Wrong! It originated in Southeast Asia, where years ago they used to ferment fish with rice. Apparently that was tasty, because this method spread to the rest of Asia and eventually to Japan. Here, they found out that fresh fish was quite tasty after all, in combination with a bit of sour rice.
A global hit
It was finally at the beginning of the nineteenth century in Tokyo that the present-day sushi took shape, featuring different types of fish, seafood, vegetables and seaweed. Prepared together in small, dainty bites. It is now eaten all over the world.
Sushi started as street food, but now there are many restaurants with sushi on the menu. In Helmond too
