In September 2024, Helmond will mark an important milestone: 80 years of freedom. It is eight decades since the city was liberated from German occupation, and to celebrate this crown anniversary, numerous events will be organised from 15 to 29 September. These activities aim not only to commemorate, but also to celebrate the freedom we know today.
15-29 September: Exhibition at Alsace Passage
For a fortnight, you can visit a special exhibition in the Alsace Passage, organised by Heemkundekring Helmont. Here you can dive into the history of the liberation of Helmond with films, photos, and historical materials. For youngsters, there is a treasure hunt through the shop windows in the centre.
September 15: Liberation Task Force and Veterans Day
An impressive column of 350 historic British vehicles will pass through Helmond on 15 September, 50 of which can be admired in the Market Square, framed by a performance by the Band of Brothers (12.00-16.00).

The same day there is also Veterans Day at Piet Blom Square. The event is partly public, with a private meeting for veterans from 4pm. At the library, you can visit the ‘Helmets Full of Stories’ exhibition. At 3.30pm, the day will conclude festively with a performance by the Hippe Gasten in a converted American school bus on the Market Square.

September 17: Lecture Heemkundekring Helmont
On 17 September, the Heemkundekring Helmont will give a lecture on the liberation of Helmond, with personal stories from the diary of Louis van de Werff's father.
September 19: Freedom Fire the Peel
On 19 September, the Freedom Fire De Peel will be lit at Het Kasteel in Helmond, as part of a ceremony featuring old military vehicles, guilds and bagpipers. Helmond is this year's host municipality for this special ceremony, which symbolises freedom regained.
September 22: Fanfare de Vooruitgang in the Speelhuis
On 22 September at Het Speelhuis, Fanfare de Vooruitgang will bring to life the story of ‘Häftling 9203’. This musical performance tells the poignant story of Jacques Hegeman, who was rounded up during the war and taken to Camp Amersfoort, as recorded by his grandson Rufus Hegeman.

Come remember and celebrate
The month of September offers plenty of opportunities to reflect on 80 years of freedom. Helmond invites you to commemorate and celebrate together. With activities for young and old, there is something for everyone. Join us and celebrate freedom with us!
